Hello,
I'm John Freund and I was born in 1930. I come from an educated Jewish family with longstanding roots in České Budějovice, a city about 160 kilometers south of Prague in the southern part of Bohemia, a province in Czechoslovakia.

My father, Gustav, was a dedicated and respected pediatrician. Our family was "deeply rooted" in České Budějovice: for generations we were judges, teachers and businessmen. My mother, Erna, grew up in the Czech town of Pisek and received an excellent education. She instilled a love of literature and music in my brother, Karel, and me. Adolf Hitler’s ascent to power ahead the Nazi regime changed everything for us.

I am the only survivor of my family; my father, mother and older brother all died at the hands of the Nazis.

On March 12^th 1948, I left Prague with a group of thirty children under 18 years of age to start a new life in Canada. To learn more about my life and those of my peers, see the library of the Virtual Historian.
